Buying a Caravan or Trailer: Key considerations

As premium models from HYMER, ERIBA caravans combine reliable quality, exceptional comfort, and winter readiness—plus a cult following! In this comprehensive buying guide, we'll help you choose the ideal model based on your specific needs for size, weight, and sleeping capacity.

What factors should you consider when selecting the perfect caravan? Size, weight, and the number of sleeping spaces are key considerations. Below, we explore different needs and recommend the ERIBA models that best suit them. Whether you're looking for a compact, versatile trailer or a luxurious travel companion, your journey of discovery begins here.

  • Space for Sweet Dreams and Memorable Days: Sleeping Arrangements and Occupancy

The perfect caravan ensures comfort for everyone, from restful nights to enjoyable days spent exploring. The number of sleeping spaces and the size of your group will guide your decision. ERIBA caravans offer various layouts designed to meet the needs of different travel groups.

    Small Caravans for 2-3 People

If you're seeking a compact and lightweight caravan for fewer passengers, we have just the solution. The ERIBA Touring is ideal for couples or small groups of up to three people, offering a comfortable and stylish travel experience.

Other great options for couples and small families include:

    • ERIBA Feeling
    • ERIBA Nova Light

For those who need a bit more versatility, the ERIBA Feeling provides a perfect balance. Its pop-up roof offers extra space, and with the optional sleeping roof package, it can accommodate two additional people, making it an excellent choice for both couples and small families.

Caravans for Families or Larger Groups

We knowthat a stress-free vacation begins with ample space. If you're traveling with family or a larger group, a spacious caravan can make all the difference. The ERIBA Nova Light offers up to five sleeping spaces, providing comfort for those with more extensive needs.

For extended families or groups, the ERIBA Feeling is the ideal choice. With flexible configurations, it can comfortably accommodate between three and seven people, thanks to its innovative bunk bed system.

  • From S to XL – Caravans in Every Size

The dimensions of a trailer affect various aspects, such as interior space, number of sleeping places, required space on site, and driving behavior. You can find out here whether a small or large caravan suits you best.

    Small Caravans: Compact Comfort

We define small ERIBA caravans as those with a body length of up to 5 meters and a total length of approximately 6 meters. Buyers who opt for smaller models often prioritize maneuverability and ease of handling, and, as always, we ensure that comfort accompanies you wherever you go.

Did you know? When measuring caravans, we differentiate between body length and total length. The body length refers to the caravan itself, while the total length includes the towing hitch, typically around one meter in length.

    Small caravans offer several advantages:

    • Highly maneuverable
    • Easy to tow
    • More affordable than larger models

These compact models also require a smaller towing vehicle, which is ideal for those with a smaller car or who are not planning to invest in a new tow vehicle.

While small caravans have less interior space compared to larger models, they are still perfect for 2 people or families of up to four. If you're planning a romantic getaway for two or an adventure with young children, these models are excellent choices:

    • ERIBA Touring
    • ERIBA Feeling
    • ERIBA Nova Light

    Narrow Caravans: Agile and Versatile

Width is just as important as length when choosing the right caravan for your travels. Narrow caravans, measuring up to 2.20 meters in width (about the same as a standard car), offer superior maneuverability, especially on narrow roads or in towns. If you enjoy exploring Italy or quaint villages, a narrower model may be ideal. These caravans also navigate highway construction zones with ease.

Despite their narrower design, these models still provide ample space for 3 to 7 people, depending on the configuration. Models in this category include:

    • ERIBA Touring
    • ERIBA Feeling
    • ERIBA Nova Light

Large Caravans: Your Home on the Road

Large caravans are those with a body length of over 6.5 meters and a total length exceeding 7.5 meters. With their generous size, these models are perfect for families, offering ample sleeping arrangements. For those seeking to use their caravan as a second home, these larger models are highly recommended.

The benefits of larger caravans include:

    • Increased comfort thanks to larger interior spaces
    • More versatile features and equipment
    • Separate living zones for privacy, such as distinct areas for the bathroom, kitchen, sleeping, and dining

However, it’s important to note that the size of these caravans means they require a powerful towing vehicle. Larger caravans also need spacious parking spots and more room for maneuvering on the road. That said, the enhanced comfort and additional features make them an ideal choice for families or those traveling with 3 to 7 people. Experience the luxury of larger ERIBA caravans with:

  • Energy Efficiency and Driver’s License: Understanding Your Caravan’s Weight

The weight of your caravan plays a critical role in various aspects, from fuel consumption to towing compatibility. A lighter caravan not only reduces fuel consumption but also allows for easier towing with a smaller vehicle. If you're not planning to purchase a new tow vehicle, the weight can be a deciding factor in your choice.

    Lightweight Caravans

Thanks to our use of advanced PUAL technology and innovative furniture construction, we focus on lightweight designs without sacrificing comfort. Small caravans like the ERIBA Touring, ERIBA Feeling 425, and ERIBA Nova Light 425 are among the most fuel-efficient options in our range.

We express a caravan’s weight in several terms:

    • Empty weight: This is the weight of the caravan without any equipment or accessories and is often not provided.
    • Mass in running order: This includes the empty weight plus all standard equipment, including filled water tanks and gas bottles.
    • Technically permissible maximum laden mass: This is the empty weight plus the maximum allowable load and is critical to ensure you don’t exceed the towing capacity of your vehicle.

Example: The ERIBA Touring 310 has a ready-to-drive weight of approximately 810 kg in its base configuration. The technically permissible total weight for this model is 1,000 kg, meaning you can carry up to 190 kg of additional load (such as tents, tables, and other luggage), depending on the chosen equipment.

    Light Caravans: Freedom in Packing

Lightweight trailers offer the freedom to travel without needing an additional driver’s license, while still providing ample space for your luggage. Our selection includes everything from mini caravans with built-in toilets to compact family models that are true lightweights.

Light Caravans up to 1,000 kg or 1.0 t from ERIBA:

The ERIBA Touring series includes models with a maximum weight of just one ton, making them ideal for smaller towing vehicles while still offering comfort and practicality despite their compact size.

Caution: Be sure to check the permissible total weight and payload based on your configuration (including any optional equipment) using our configurator.

Caravans up to 1,300 kg or 1.3 t from ERIBA:

Caravans up to 1.3 tons, such as the following models, provide plenty of room for luggage, even when paired with less powerful towing vehicles:

    • ERIBA Touring
    • ERIBA Feeling
    • ERIBA Nova Light

Caution: As always, verify the permissible total weight and payload in your chosen configuration, considering any optional equipment.

Which Caravans Can You Drive with a Class B License?

For drivers who passed their Class 3 license before 1999, there are no restrictions on towing any lawful combination of car and trailer. For those who obtained their license after 1999, there are some limits.

With a Class B license in Germany, you can drive a car and caravan combination with a permissible total weight of up to 3.5 tons. Since a typical compact car weighs between 1.5 and 2.0 tons, this allows you to tow a caravan weighing up to 1.5 tons—subject to your car’s maximum towing capacity. Good news: Many of our models fall within this limit, so no additional license is required!

Important: If the combined weight of your car and caravan exceeds 3.5 tons, you might need an extension: in Germany it is called B96 or BE, while in the UK it is a C1 entitlement on your license. Always check your destinations’ transportation laws regarding maximum vehicle weight and international drivers’ licenses.
